Virgin Islands remain undefeated, Mexico upset Puerto Rico and Jamaica win in 3rd day of the Centrobasket

Jamaica opened the day with a dominant victory over Guatemala by the score of 66-48. It was a competitive match in the first half and until the Caribbean team took over a third quarter won by the score of 20-6 to set the course of the rest of the game. Tarita Gordon was the best player for Jamaica with 16 points and 7 rebounds, while for the Guatemalans the best was Sonia Vásquez with 20 points and 7 rebounds. Jamaica improved its record to 2-1. Guatemala has not found the winning route in three games.
Mexico defeated Puerto Rico, a team that had proved to be the strongest in the championship so far, by a score of 64-58. Both teams exchanged baskets throughout the game, but Mexico managed to close with more effectiveness (in a second half the team won 37-27) against a Puerto Rican squad that was erratic defensively for the 40 minutes of play. Jacqueline Luna was the best for Mexico with 17 points and 6 rebounds, while for Puerto Rico the best was Pamela Rosado with 17 points in the loss. Both teams are 2-1 in the tournament.
The host Virgin Islands repeated the formula and once again showed to be a high-quality team by defeating their Caribbean rival Bahamas by the score of 63-56. The home team was impressive in the opening minutes of the game, managing to dominate the first quarter 24-12. The Bahamas fought and managed to shorten the lead to five points (59-54) with a Joette Fernander basket with 3:34 in the game clock, however, Virgin Islands maintained their lead and won the game. Natalie Day added another great individual performance so far in the tournament with 22 points and 9 rebounds in the win, while for the Bahamas the best was captain Phillicia Kelly with 14 points and 4 rebounds. The Virgin Islands remain undefeated with a 3-0 record in the championship. The Bahamas has not won in their three outings in St. Thomas.
On the fourth day of competition in the Women's Centrobasket Championship 2017, Mexico will face Guatemala, Puerto Rico will play against the Bahamas and the Virgin Islands will look to remain unbeaten against Jamaica.
The best three teams from the Women's Centrobasket Championship 2017 will qualify for the FIBA AmeriCup Women 2017 to be played from August 6-13 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
